At CountyClean Group, we pride ourselves on creating an environment where employees can grow, develop and thrive. Through substantial investment in training and skill enhancement, many of our team members have advanced significantly in their careers. Here are a few of inspiring stories from our dedicated team.
Ben Knights: From Entry-Level to Department Manager
“I began my career at CountyClean eleven and a half years ago as an operative, with no qualifications. Over the years, through substantial investment in both time and money for skill set improvement and necessary courses, I have significantly advanced in my career.
Initially, I was part of a general team where I undertook various tasks. My dedication to learning and improving my skills led me to complete numerous courses, including CSE, HPWJ, street works, a two-part electrical course and Health & Safety (H&S) training. These certifications were crucial in building a strong foundation for my technical abilities.
As I gained more experience, I transitioned to the Pump Engineering department. Here, I faced the challenge of starting anew. At this point, I couldn’t even wire a 3-pin household plug! However, with additional training and perseverance, I quickly progressed to commissioning 3-phase commercial circuits.
My continuous learning and professional development didn’t stop there. After years of hands-on technical work, I transitioned to an office role. I now lead the Pumps and Sales teams, demonstrating a clear route for self-improvement and career progression within the company.
My journey at CountyClean showcases the possibilities for growth and development through dedication and continuous learning. It highlights a strong career path from entry-level positions to leadership roles, emphasising the importance of investing in employee development for mutual success.
I owe many thanks to the owners, Mike & Debbie Walker.”

Nick Silvester: From Operative to Skilled Engineer and HGV Qualified
“I joined CountyClean Group in 2021. On my first day, I was on a high-pressure water jetting course, which has allowed me to safely work with water jetting equipment. Throughout my career here, I have been given the following training and qualifications:
- High-pressure water jetting
- Essential electrics
- High risk confined spaces
- Traffic management
- First aid
- Superflex operator
- HGV class 2 and Driver CPC
CountyClean Group is an enjoyable place to work and build a lasting career. I started as an operative and within weeks was offered the opportunity to be a trainee engineer. Once I became an engineer, I was then offered a Class 2 HGV license and driver CPC, which I passed a year ago. Since then, I have been trained to operate various types of tankers and sweepers within the CCG fleet.”

Jock Campbell: HGV Operative to Waste Recycling Depot Manager
“I began working for CountyClean Group in December 2010, as an HGV driver. In this role, I operated a variety of vehicles, including tankers, combi units, jetting vans and porta-reels. Early in my career, I received comprehensive training in confined space entry, high-pressure water jetting, street works and first aid. I found my job highly enjoyable due to its variety and the opportunity to meet many people.
In July 2016, I was promoted to Depot Manager at our new Waste Recycling depot. Since then, I have also been trained to operate our grab lorry and JCB loader. I find my role as Depot Manager very rewarding. This March, we welcomed Andy Head as my assistant. Andy has been with CountyClean for several years as a very experienced HGV Driver and operative and has integrated seamlessly into the waste recycling role.
Working for CountyClean has always been a pleasure. Seven years ago, I underwent major heart surgery, and the support I received from everyone at CountyClean during that time, and since, has been immense. I am deeply grateful for this support and thank everyone for their kindness and assistance.”

Brian Newton: HGV Operative to Supervisor
“I joined CountyClean Group in March 2022 having been an HGV driver for many years. I had experience of driving various types of vehicles which helped me adjust and quickly further learn driving skills required at CountyClean.
Shortly after starting, I was assigned to be the main sweeper driver for the company. Sweepers are left-hand drive vehicles which can be challenging to become accustomed to!
I developed my skillset swiftly, undertaking numerous respected and accredited courses within the liquid waste industry, including:
- High Pressure Water Jetting
- Confined Space Entry
- National Water Hygiene
- Construction Skills Certification Scheme
Staff have specific skill sets and/or responsibilities, mine being that of ‘Support Vehicle Supervisor’ which means I now oversee our Sweeper fleet plus other support vehicles and am actively involved in the vehicle configuration when new machines are sourced. No two days are the same at CountyClean; I may be driving a left-hand drive sweeper all day, or there may be a need to switch to a right-hand drive vehicle depending on the need of the business.
I often have to assist the Police and Highways Agencies for emergency call outs. These range from road traffic accidents to oil spillages which require quick thinking and problem solving skills.
I had the privilege of cleaning the parade ground for King Charles III Coronation which was a memorable experience.
As you can see, working for CountyClean provides staff with many unique and exciting training opportunities, with plenty of variety, for which I am proud to be a part of.”
