Is your sewage system complaint with regulations?

From 2nd of October 2023, new sewage discharges must adhere to specific regulations. If a new discharge would exceed the permitted limits for groundwater or surface water, it cannot share the same outlet as an existing septic tank discharge. Furthermore, any new sewage discharge must not be within a 50-meter radius of other activities involving groundwater or water discharge. These rules have been implemented to minimise sewage pollution and protect the environment and waterways. You can learn more and see if your tank is compliant by clicking here.

Looking After your Septic Tank after Installation:

Nature makes a septic tank work but over time, the sludge at the bottom of your tank will build up. This sludge has to be removed to ensure the tank continues to work correctly and to prevent the soakaway from becoming clogged. De-sludging should normally take place every twelve months, however this depends on the tank size and usage.

If you know where the septic tank outlet drains to, check that the discharge is a light grey colour. If the liquid includes dark solid material or recognisable sewage solids, this shows that the tank needs de-sludging.

You should plan your de-sludging well in advance to avoid difficulties. If the time is approaching for your septic tank to be emptied or you would like more information and advice on septic tank installations then give our friendly team a call on 0800 171 2204 or 01323 741818.

If you are replacing an existing septic tank system, full planning permission may not be required. Instead, the work may be carried out under a building notice to meet the building regulations requirements.

The new sewage system will also need to adhere to the General Binding Rules set out by the Environment Agency. Learn more about the current regulations here.

Whilst it is possible to install a new septic tank yourself, we recommend the installation of any sewage system should always be carried out a by an experienced and qualified professional.

Most septic tank installations are completed within a 3-6 days. It’s important to bear in mind that the duration will differ for each installation due to a variety of factors including the size of the tank and the ground conditions.

For a septic tank, a soakaway is required.

Waste water is no longer compliant when discharging to a watercourse, ditch or open ground.

It is recommended that septic tanks should be at least seven meters away from any dwelling. The tank should also be within 30 meters to an access point for easy maintenance and emptying.
