Hazardous Waste Disposal – What Your Business Needs to Know

As a business, you legally have a duty of care to ensure that any waste which is classified as Hazardous causes no harm or damage to people or the environment.

The classifications for what is considered Hazardous were updated earlier this year to harmonise existing EU legislation.  This means some businesses that previously were not classified as handling hazardous waste now will be – so it’s important to ensure you know what to do to comply.

Examples of Waste which may be considered hazardous include:

  • Asbestos
  • Chemicals
  • Batteries
  • Solvents
  • Pesticides
  • Oils (not including edible oils) eg car oil
  • Equipment containing ozone depleting substances eg fridges
  • Hazardous waste containers

This list is not exhaustive. Full guidance on Waste Classification can be found here
